Cultural Exchange & Homestay

2025-05-09

This trip to the United States for social research gave me a more three-dimensional and in-depth understanding of American society. From Los Angeles to San Francisco, from public service agencies to higher education institutions, from cultural landmarks to volunteer services, This experience not only broadened my international perspective, but also gave me a deeper understanding of the cultural differences between China and the United States.

During my visits to the Los Angeles Police Department and fire station, I deeply felt the professionalism and humanity of the American public service system. The advanced dispatch system and standardized law enforcement procedures in the police department, and the complete equipment configuration and rapid emergency response mechanism in the fire station, all reflect the modernization level of American social governance. Especially at the police department, I had the honor of trying on police equipment weighing 15 kilograms, personally experiencing the hardships and greatness of being a police officer.

The cultural experience was also unforgettable. At Universal Studios, I felt the powerful creativity and expressiveness of the American cultural industry, with various movie scenes recreated before my eyes; at the Lakers' home game, the enthusiastic cheers of tens of thousands of spectators allowed me to experience Americans' passion for sports; at the Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles night view under the vast starry sky filled me with a yearning for scientific exploration. These experiences have made me deeply realize that cultural soft power is an important component of a country's comprehensive strength.

Educational exchange was one of the focuses of this research. At an American high school, I explained Chinese New Year customs to the students and demonstrated calligraphy art, Seeing their strong interest in Chinese culture, I deeply felt the importance of cultural exchange. At the University of California, Los Angeles and California Baptist University, I observed that American higher education emphasizes the cultivation of critical thinking and practical abilities, an educational philosophy worth learning from.

My volunteer experience gave me a new understanding of civic awareness in American society. While sorting donated clothes, I learned about the well-functioning model of the American volunteer service system. According to statistics, about 30% of American adults regularly participate in volunteer services. This spirit of social participation is of great significance to building a harmonious society. Through research and classroom learning, I have gained a systematic understanding of American family structures and volunteer service organizations. Diverse family forms such as single-parent families, DINK families, and same-sex partner families reflect the inclusiveness of American society; while the wide variety of volunteer service organizations reflects the maturity of civil society.

This research has made me realize that although China and the United States have cultural differences, they share common goals in pursuing a better life and promoting social progress. As young people of the new era, we should view differences with an open and inclusive mindset, promote exchanges with a spirit of mutual learning and mutual reference, and contribute our own strength to building a community with a shared future for mankind. This experience will become a precious asset in my life, encouraging me to continuously broaden my horizons and improve myself.
