MAO RUIJUN

Internship Program in Japan

2025-05-09

My internship at a Japanese onsen resort hotel over the past three months was a significant turning point in my career. Not only was the scenery beautiful and the work environment elegant, but I also gained invaluable practical experience and cross-cultural work opportunities, which was especially meaningful for a student passionate about travel and cross-cultural experiences.

My internship role covered the three core departments of hotel operations—front desk reception, food and beverage service, and kitchen assistance. Each rotation brought new challenges and learning opportunities. The front desk is the "face" of the hotel, responsible for assisting guests with luggage, check-in and check-out procedures, answering guest questions, etc. This role taught me the importance of customer service and how to maintain politeness and efficiency in a fast-paced environment.

In the restaurant, I participated in setting up dinner buffets, timely replenishment of food, table clearing, etc. I learned about the dining preferences of different customer groups and improved my ability to respond to unexpected situations. My main work in the kitchen was helping prepare ingredients, arranging cold dishes, and cleaning, which gave me a more intuitive understanding of the food production process and the power of teamwork.

Living in the hotel-provided single dormitory, I had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in local life. Commuting daily between the seaside town and the bustling workplace, I experienced the unique natural scenery and cultural charm of Oita City. On weekends, I explored nearby attractions, tried local onsen and seafood, and interacted with travelers from all over the world. This experience greatly enriched my perspective on life.

This internship comprehensively trained my language skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. In particular, my cross-cultural communication skills have improved significantly. Direct contact with international tourists has enabled me to speak Japanese more confidently in daily conversations. At the same time, I have also learned how to remain calm under pressure and flexibly handle various work challenges.

Looking back on this internship, my biggest takeaway is: "Details determine success or failure." Whether it's the service attitude at the front desk or the small details in the kitchen, every step directly affects the guest experience. The road ahead is still long. I plan to apply the experience I have learned to my future studies and work, continuously improving my professional skills, and actively seeking more cross-border exchange opportunities to broaden my horizons.

In summary, this three-month overseas internship experience is not just a highlight on my resume, but also a valuable asset for my personal growth and career development.
