Program Introduction
Summer Work and Travel Program
The Summer Work & Travel USA Program is founded on the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948, which laid the groundwork for U.S. exchange visitor programs. Before being introduced to mainland China, the program had already operated successfully for over 60 years in Europe, the Americas, and various Asian countries and regions. Each year, approximately 150,000 students worldwide participate in this program, using their summer vacation to work at U.S. companies under a J-1 visa for a three-month cultural exchange and practical training period, followed by up to one month of travel. Participants gain first-hand experience of American society, culture, and customs while improving their English and expanding their global perspective. A unique feature of this program is that it allows college students from around the world to work side-by-side with American peers and other international participants. All students are legally employed, receive the same wages as their American coworkers, and are covered by medical and accident insurance. Supervised by the U.S. government, the program not only enhances students’ professional and language skills but also helps reduce the financial burden of experiencing life in the United States.
MoreThe Trainee category is governed by regulations in [22 CFR 62.22]. This program helps exchange visitors improve their professional skills through structured training in the U.S., focusing on American methods and expertise. Training must not repeat previous experience. The program cannot be used for regular employment, and trainees cannot replace regular employees. Recent rule updates removed the “specialty” and “non-specialty” occupation distinction, created a new internship program, and updated participation criteria. Sponsors must vet and sign agreements with any third parties helping with recruitment and training. A completed Form DS-7002 (Training/Internship Placement Plan) is required before issuing Form DS-2019. Flight training rules remain unchanged.
MoreCultural Exchange & Homestay is a program designed to support international talent development and practical education in Chinese universities. It integrates overseas training for young teachers and international social practice for college and university students. A typical program involves one teacher leading a group of 12–16 students to form a research team and conduct a 14-day social study in the United States.
MoreThe International Volunteer Internship Program, also known as the Volunteer Homestay Program, offers university students the opportunity to work as international volunteers at non-profit organizations or companies abroad. Over a period of 4 to 12 weeks, participants join local staff and international peers in workplace learning and hands-on programs. Outside of work, students can travel locally, visit universities, and experience authentic cultural life. Accommodation is provided in host families or shared apartments. This program helps students: Enhance cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills Develop global awareness and a spirit of social responsibility Improve English and professional workplace abilities Gain valuable overseas experience and insight into industry operations and advanced management models
